Situation
I developed a voice-first quiz game for the Google Action and Amazon Alexa markets, leveraging my expertise in developing engaging and interactive voice experiences.
I had to deal with diverse stakeholders, internal and external. I was responsible for the conversational flow, development, and worked closely with a voice actor studio.
The game consists of three questions on the topics of marketing and the most famous brands. The project requirements included creating two versions, one with a voice actor and another with synthetic speech. For the first option, the company had the opportunity to collaborate with a voice actor studio to obtain high-quality audio content.
Task
The goal was to position the spin-off Voice Branding in the Italian voice-tech marketa nd increase public and business awareness of voice technology’s potential.
Action
- Research: I started by researching the most popular quiz games on the market to analyze popular quiz games to identify user needs and NLU requirements for a similar quiz experience, and drafted the bot persona,
- After identifying the main use case, I write some sample dialogs,
- Design the conversational flow: happy path and then secondary paths for error recovery
- Development (NLU model & code): after some iterations with the team, I dove deep in the details (fallbacks, repair from errors, misunderstanding) to bring the prototype to life,
- Content creation & management: together with a PM marketing, we created a list of 100 questions related to marketing and advertising facts,
- Coordination with a voice actor studio: I intermediated communication between the recording studio and the content creators for the recording process.
Results
As a result, both applications had 25k players between May and November 2021.
Brand quiz was awarded a Special Star for Interaction Design as the best project in the multimedia and gaming category at the 2022 MediaStar Awards held in Milan.
Lessons learned
The use of voice talent was crucial to the success. Working with the voice actor studio provided me with valuable insights into vocal timbre and its impact on the perception of a assistant persona. Based on this assumption, we asked the voice actor to convey different tones and pitches for the quiz’s answers. The user experience was much more engaging compared to the synthetic voice version, which made a huge difference.
